6 steps to teaching your dog to fetch–By Josh Weiss-Roessler

Teaching your dog how to fetch seems like it should be one of those things that’s so simple it requires no real thought or effort. After all, dogs love both playing and pleasing their humans, and fetch involves both of these things — you should just be able to do it, right?

Short answer: nope.

While there are some dogs that just seem to intrinsically understand the game and will automatically chase and retrieve whatever object you use the first time you try, most do not. Either they sit and stare at you, wondering why you would choose to throw away a perfectly good toy, or they chase after the object but don’t “catch” it, or bring it back.

So what can you do to help your pup learn the game like a pro? Here are six tried and true tips.

  1. Start with chasing
If your dog is of the “sit and stare” variety, your first goal is to teach him to chase after the object you want him to fetch. Generally speaking, there are three ways to do this, depending upon what motivates your pup: you can offer him affection, treats, or play for retrieving the chosen object.Whichever motivator you use, the process is basically the same. Encourage your dog to go after the item you want him to fetch. When he grabs it, reward him with his motivator of choice, then take the object away. Repeat this a few times, then toss the object a short distance. When he goes for it, immediately reward him again. Repeat the process until you can reliably toss the object and get him to chase it.
  2. Add extra motivation
Want to encourage her to give chase even more? Try holding her back after throwing the toy. She’ll naturally tug against you, especially if you offer verbal encouragement while still holding her back. Once you finally let go, she’ll be after the object like a rocket.
  3. Retrieving
After your dog chases the object, the next step is getting him to actually bring it back to you. There are a number of different things you can do depending on your dog’s behavior. If he won’t bring the object back at all, it can help to use a second toy. Once he’s “caught” the first one, show him the second and throw it in the opposite direction. He probably won’t carry the first toy with him, but it will at least get him accustomed to the idea of running back to you after he’s caught the object. After he masters this, try calling him to come back to you while he’s holding the object and asking him to drop it. If you show the second object, he’ll likely drop the first one to chase after it. Eventually, he’ll learn that if he comes back to you and drops the object, you’ll throw it again.
  4. Avoiding “keep away.”
For dogs that like to catch the object and run off with it, a rope can help. Once she catches the object, wriggle the line and pull it towards you or run away from your dog with it. This should encourage her to follow you. Even if she doesn’t, reel the rope in and praise her when she gets close, then toss the object again and repeat. Do this for a few weeks and your pup should come to you naturally.
  5. Getting the object back
If your dog stops and drops the object before reaching you, back away while saying “All the way,” or “Bring it.” Once he reaches the spot where you were originally located, go to him and offer praise, then toss the object again. If the issue is that he won’t let go, tell him to drop it and put a treat by his nose. Most dogs will drop the object to go for the treat.
  6. Pick something your dog likes
Perhaps the most important rule of all — your dog isn’t going to chase after something unless she actually wants it, so feel free to experiment with different objects (balls, Frisbees, sticks) until you find one that she’s interested in.

Do you have trouble sleeping at night?

Do you have trouble sleeping at night? Then maybe this is for you. When you worry about needing sleep and twist around trying to find a comfortable position, you probably only making it more difficult to relax. How can we solve the problem of insomnia? Here are some tips:

http://www.innxproducts.com/Home/

* Let go of your worries. Your presentation at work tomorrow. That fight with your spouse. That lousy test score. None of these worries are helping you sleep. So how do you let go of your anxiety? Keep a notebook by your bed and jot down any problems you’re having – along with possible solutions – before you go to sleep. Outlining a “plan of action” will make your problems seem manageable, and that’ll help you fall asleep.
* Cut the lights. Bright lights send a signal to your brain that you should be awake. So avoid them 2 to 3 hours before bedtime. According to Dr. Michael Breus, author of Good Night, you should expose yourself to no more than 60 watts of light when you’re winding down for bed – that’s the amount in a low-wattage lamp light bulb.

* Get up after 20 minutes and go into another room. The bedroom needs to be associated with sleep – not with being restless. So head into the living room and do something until you feel drowsy. But don’t get on the computer or watch TV – the glow of the monitors mimics daylight, which tricks your body into staying awake longer. You need to do an activity where you can keep the lights low – so your body can get tired. So listen to relaxing music or do some light reading.

* Finally find a bed cover that is just the right thickness to sleep on. Not too thick which makes you hot and not too thin which makes it feel like you have nothing on your bed.  This mattress pad SUPER comfortable!! So plush, it feels like you’re sleeping on clouds!

Tips to make your dog happy

Dogs are interesting in that they are not like people, they are often happy just being So firstly try to think like a dog, which is hard as they don’t really think much at all. That said dogs have different personalities and needs. So you have to consider yourself and what you find enjoyable and compatible with your dogs temperament.

1

Play games, such as fetch, catch, monkey in the middle and tug-of-war. High-energy games, such as the ones mentioned, rile up your pup and keep boredom at bay.

2

Go outside, a dog park, garden, beach etc, and let him run around while you ponder deep thoughts and try to not think at the same time. He runs and runs burning valuable energy, sniffs other dogs bums, and scares ducks. He is happy anywhere, that’s where he can be a real dog in nature.

3

Play with other dogs. When playing with each other, they enjoy wrestling together and chasing each other.

4

Fill a bone or rubber toy designed to hold yummy fillings and treats. Aim for hardy bones, such as femur bones, that can last even a big pup nearly his entire life, so your dog isn’t at risk of swallowing tiny pieces and splinters. Add a bit of yogurt and a few pieces of cheese inside and stick the toy or bone in the freezer for a bit. Once it’s frozen, toss it to your bored pup and he’ll probably work at it for quite a while. You don’t have to freeze the toys or bones, but doing so makes the filling and treats last longer.

5

Make puzzles for your pup to figure out. Puzzles serve as one of the best ways to stimulate your dog’s mind. Stuffer toys are puzzles in themselves, but try for something else, like hiding your pup’s ball under his bed, or creating a cardboard maze for your pup to try and find his way out of. Make him use his mind to find a solution to the problem you created.

what to prepare before you go to beach?

http://www.innxproducts.com/Pets/car-seat-cover/Delux-car-seat-cover.html

The beach is one of the very favorite places to go in the summer. Especially you can bring with your dog, it dig and run and swim for hours, really enjoy it . To make sure everybody has the best time possible, there are some precautions you should take. Be diligent and mindful of the beach’s perils and unfortunate incidents won’t bring dark clouds on your beach day.

First, make sure dogs are allowed at your chosen destination. If we are allowed, make sure you know the rules—Do we have to stay on a leash? Are there only certain areas we can visit or certain times of day we are not allowed? Are there protected wildlife of which you must be mindful, like sea turtles or shorebirds?

1. Pack a bag of necessities. If your chosen beach does not have a shady spot for your dog to cool off from time to time, bring a beach umbrella. You will want to insist that your dog takes regular breaks in the shade so he does not get overheated.

2. Also pack plenty of water and either a travel dog bowl (which you can roll up so it will take up next to no room in your beach bag) or a travel dog waterer.

3. Be sure your dog has a waterproof collar and ID tag incase he runs off.

4. Bring a sturdy, durable leash to restrain your dog. Most beaches that allow dogs require that they be leashed. Once your worn-in, trusty old leather leash gets wet and drug around in the sand, it might give up on you. Consider purchasing an extra nylon leash just for use at the beach that you know you can depend on.

5. Don’t forget to bring a towel for your dog as well as yourself. We get cold after we get out of the water, especially when we’re riding home in an air conditioned car.

How to keep your dog safe at the beach

It is the time of the year to the beach, we should be moving towards the sea, embrace the sun, hug the dog and the person we love! Here are ten things you need to know to keep your dog safe at the beach.

  1. Not all dogs can swim. That’s right, the doggie paddle does not come naturally to every dog … like Ty for example. In fact, certain breeds like Corgis and Pugs don’t swim at all. Find some quiet water and give your dog a chance to show you if he can swim or not by encouraging him to follow you. Never throw your dog in the water and expect him to swim.

    http://www.innxproducts.com/Pets/cargo-liner-cover/Delux-Cargo-liner-cover.html
  2. Drinking salt water is a bad idea. This is logical, and yet getting Buster continues to try to lap up the ocean. The more I want him to stop – the more he wants to drink. In the event you have more luck with your dog, pack plenty of water to keep you both hydrated.
  3. Invest in a life vest.Waves, current, and rip tides can quickly exhaust your dog, and that can be deadly. Life vests made specially for dogs come in all sizes. When you’re making your selection, look for one that fastens at three points and has a handle on the back, making it easy for you to lift your dog out of the water.

    http://www.innxproducts.com/Pets/car-seat-cover/Delux-car-seat-cover.html
  4. Use sun screen. You’re not the only one that needs to be concerned with sun burn. Get a sun screen specially formulated for dogs and apply it to your dog’s nose and ears 30 minutes before hitting the beach.
  5. Beware of submerged dangers.Sharp rocks, shells, coral, and jellyfish can injure your dog. And, because dogs often don’t indicate when they’re in pain, you’ll need to watch his body language and carefully check him for cuts and scrapes.
  6. Calm water is best.Surf boards, jet skis, and big waves can frighten your dog. Find a quiet place to play with your pup, or locate a local dog beach were surfing and boating are not allowed.
  7. Head for cover. The sun and the sand are fun, but it’s nice to have a place to take a break in the shade and out of the wind. Consider  bringing an inexpensive tent to give you and your dog a comfortable place to relax.
  8. Don’t overdo it.Running on sand is strenuous, so don’t expect your dog to be able to fetch as long as he might at the dog park. And, start slow, giving him time to warm up to avoid a muscle pull.
  9. Cold water can hurt.Remember, if your dog has arthritis or other joint issues, swimming in cold water can irritate the condition. Stick to shallow water and bays where the water is warmer.
  10. Rinse thoroughly. When you’re done playing, take time to rinse salt, sand, and microscopic organisms from your dog’s coat. Also, be sure to dry your dog’s ears as moisture in the ear canal can cause ear infections.
